(Or, Why “We Were Going to Book…” Is One of the Saddest Sentences in Theatre.)
We’ve all done it. You see an event online and think, “That looks brilliant! We’ll definitely go.” Then life happens. The dog needs a bath. The washing machine starts making suspicious noises. Someone suggests “let’s decide later.” Before you know it, the show’s been cancelled because not enough tickets were sold. Cue collective disappointment.
At The Whirlwind Theatre, pre-booking isn’t just about reserving your favourite seat. It’s one of the most important ways you can support live entertainment and help us continue bringing world-class comedy, incredible musicians, family entertainment and unforgettable experiences to our community.
Every Ticket Tells a Story
Unlike massive arenas with thousands of seats, we’re proudly intimate. That means every booking genuinely counts. When tickets start selling well in advance, they tell us:
- “People are excited about this show.”
- “The marketing is working.”
- “The audience is coming.”
- “Let’s get ready for an amazing night!”
It gives us confidence to move ahead knowing there’s an audience waiting to enjoy the performance.
Here’s the Bit Nobody Likes Talking About…
Producing live entertainment is expensive. Before an artist even steps on stage, we’ve already invested in marketing, staffing, technical equipment, venue preparation and, of course, the performers themselves. If ticket sales remain very low in the lead-up to an event, we sometimes have to make the difficult decision to postpone or cancel the show.
Trust us, it’s heartbreaking. Nobody wins. Not the performers. Not the audience. Not us.
“But We Were Going to Book…”
If we had a rand for every time someone said: “Oh no! We were going to book this afternoon!” …we probably wouldn’t need to worry about ticket sales. We know people genuinely intend to come. Unfortunately, performers can’t be paid in good intentions, and the electricity company has shown absolutely no interest in accepting “we meant to buy tickets” as payment.
You’re Supporting More Than Just the Show
Buying a ticket isn’t simply purchasing entertainment. You’re supporting:
- Incredible local and international performers.
- Sound and lighting technicians.
- Front-of-house staff.
- Our hardworking kitchen and bar team.
- Event organisers.
- And a proudly independent theatre that’s passionate about bringing people together.
Every early booking helps us continue doing what we love.
Make It a Proper Night Out
One of the best-kept secrets about The Whirlwind Theatre is that the evening doesn’t begin when the curtain rises. Our Whirlwind Café & Bar opens well before every performance, giving you plenty of time to relax before the show. Grab dinner. Enjoy a cocktail. Share a bottle of wine. Catch up with friends. Enjoy the view because… well… life is short. Many of our regulars arrive an hour or two early because they know half the fun is soaking up the atmosphere before the entertainment even begins. No rushing. No queues. No stress. Just good food, good drinks and good company.
Performers Love a Full House
Ask any comedian, musician or actor what they prefer. A half-empty room… or a packed audience that’s ready to laugh, clap, cheer and have a fantastic time. (It’s not a trick question.) Nothing lifts a performance quite like the energy of a full theatre. Your booking doesn’t just fill a seat—it helps create the atmosphere that makes every show unforgettable.
Booking Early Helps Everyone
When you pre-book, you’re helping us:
- Confirm shows with confidence.
- Plan staffing levels.
- Prepare the café and bar.
- Support our performers.
- Continue bringing exciting entertainment to our stage.
And as a bonus… You don’t have to panic-buy tickets at 4:57 pm while convincing yourself there’ll “probably still be seats.”
The Bottom Line
If you see a show that makes you smile, laugh, reminisce or say, “We should go to that!”… Book it. Don’t wait for next week. Don’t wait until payday if you don’t have to. Don’t assume everyone else is waiting too. Because sometimes everyone is waiting… and suddenly there’s no show to wait for.
Thank You
Every ticket purchased, every event shared, every friend you bring along and every meal enjoyed at The Whirlwind Café & Bar helps keep this little theatre doing big things. The Whirlwind Theatre isn’t just a place to watch entertainment. It’s a place where memories are made, artists find audiences, strangers become friends and laughter echoes long after the lights go down.
We’ll keep finding amazing performers. We’ll keep cooking great food. We’ll keep pouring the drinks. We’ll keep creating unforgettable evenings. All we ask is one small favour… If you want to come, book. Your future self (and ours) will thank you.
